Plastic Bags

Premier Dalton McGuinty says Ontario should seriously consider following the example set by Nova Scotia and ban the province’s liquor stores from handing out plastic bags that environmental activists are calling some of the worst in circulation. The Manitoba government announced in March that it had stopped replacing its liquor stores’ supplies of plastic bags, leaving customers with a choice of paper or reusable polypropylene bags. Ontario should look at doing the same thing, McGuinty said Wednesday. “I think we should give that some real consideration,” said McGuinty, adding the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is already trying to be more environmentally responsible with its bottle-return program. “We’re proud of the leadership that the LCBO has shown and working with us in terms of our bottle-return policy. I believe they do issue some kind of canvas bags at this point in time. It’s something that obviously we should take a look at.” What’s your view? The union representing GO Transit bus drivers and ticket agents says it’s not a matter of if, but when, its members will go on strike. A notice on the union’s website says the company will not be making any further offers and the union executive will meet Thursday to “determine when we will commence job action against the employer.” A final attempt by the company and the union to negotiate a new agreement failed on Wednesday. Unionized workers have been without a contract since June 1. It means nearly 1,200 bus drivers, ticket agents, office workers and maintenance crews could go on strike with 48 hours notice. Although GO train crews are not part of the same union – and GO trains will continue to run in the event of a strike – delays are expected. Do you use GO Transit? Gas in the GTA
Gas prices in the GTA continue to climb. As of April 16 it was clocking in at about $1.17 a litre. Even before this increase, the latest MJ Ervin & Associates survey showed the average price of regular across Canada is at its highest level in almost three years. And its not just in Canada. South of the border, the latest AAA survey shows average price of regular gasoline is at a record high, $3.38.6 US per American gallon. What do you think is fueling the rise? Is the B.C. health system equipped to diagnose and treat Lyme disease?

The parents of a young woman diagnosed with Lyme disease are speaking out against the B.C. health system because, they said, doctors have failed to properly treat their daughter, causing her to become much sicker than she might have been otherwise. “Our health-care providers are very biased about this disease. They don’t want to acknowledge it,” said Jay McQuhae, the woman’s father. “You are helpless. Your hands are tied. You can do nothing but just sit there and watch your daughter deteriorate.” Marie McQuhae, 23, believes she may have contracted Lyme disease when she was bitten by a tick while hiking the West Coast Trail a few years ago. Should Pickton be tried on the 20 outstanding murder charges?
A second trial will not go ahead if the earlier convictions are upheld on appeal. (CBC) An appeal hearing in the Robert Pickton murder case has been tentatively scheduled for nine days in Vancouver starting March 30, 2009. Six issues will be argued in the appeal, including the charge to the jury by B.C. Supreme Court Justice James Williams, in which he said jurors could convict even if they found Pickton didn’t act alone. Pickton was found guilty in December of second-degree murder in the deaths of six women who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The former pig farmer from Coquitlam, B.C., has also been charged with 20 more counts of murder in similar cases, but B.C’s Attorney General Wally Oppal has said the second trial will not go ahead if the six convictions are upheld at the appeal.
