Feds put $101M toward new Marine Atlantic ferry
A new Marine Atlantic vessel for the Newfoundland-to-Nova-Scotia route will have substantially more capacity of any of its existing ferries, officials say.

Crews work to clear an avalanche that closed the Coquihalla Highway on Thursday. (CBC) A truck driver was rescued after a massive avalanche swept across another B.C. highway this time in the far northeastern corner of the province. Highway 97 between MacKenzie and Chetwynd in the Peace River District will likely remained closed for several days while crews clear away the quarter-kilometre long, 10-metre-deep avalanche, RCMP told CBC News on Monday. One tractor-trailer was caught in the slide, but the driver was safely rescued without injuries. Crews were still searching the site at noon to determine if any other vehicles were involved. (CBC) New Democratic MLA Gregor Robertson is expected to announce Sunday his intention to run for mayor in Vancouver’s next municipal election. Robertson’s announcement comes on the heels of incumbent Coun. Peter Ladner saying he plans to challenge current Mayor Sam Sullivan for the Non-Partisan Association’s (NPA) nomination in November’s civic election. As the first contingent of what’s expected to be P.E.I.’s largest-ever group of foreign workers arrived to work this week, some are suggesting they should be allowed to stay permanently.
What should happen to Wakefest?
Wakefest, the three-day wakeboarding festival with a reputation for attracting large numbers of drunk and rowdy youths, will not be held in Penticton this year. Last year the City of Kelowna denied organizers IMG Canada an event licence for 2008 because it had been so rowdy in 2007, so festival organizers approached Pentiction about hosting the event. But on Thursday evening, city council rejected the application. Mayor Jake Kimberley said Penticton simply wouldn’t be able to round up enough RCMP to monitor the event.
