This year, Ontario joined Saskatchewan and Alberta in celebrating “Family Day” and creating a mid-winter long weekend. Manitoba has decided to call its holiday “Louis Riel Day,” after the Metis leader. B.C is at work. What do you think? Should British Columbia have a mid-winter long weekend? Or would the cost to employers be too much?

N.L. leads way in provincial GDP growth
Mining and oil development in Newfoundland and Labrador was strong enough last year to end Alberta’s three-year reign as the fastest-growing provincial economy, Statistics Canada said Monday.

What should happen to Wakefest?
Wakefest, the three-day wakeboarding festival with a reputation for attracting large numbers of drunk and rowdy youths, will not be held in Penticton this year. Last year the City of Kelowna denied organizers IMG Canada an event licence for 2008 because it had been so rowdy in 2007, so festival organizers approached Pentiction about hosting the event. But on Thursday evening, city council rejected the application. Mayor Jake Kimberley said Penticton simply wouldn’t be able to round up enough RCMP to monitor the event.
