Government of Canada funds new transit security projects in Alberta
CALGARY The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that the City of Calgary, Alberta, will receive up to $909,000 and Sherwood Park, Alberta will receive up to $37,500 in funding for the development of awareness programs; the upgrade of access control measures and security technology; and the development of risk assessments. The funding is being provided through the fourth round of Transit-Secure, the Government of Canada s passenger rail and urban transit security contribution program.

School bus driver sentenced for impaired driving

UBC spokesman Scott Macrae said Tuesday the university is not taking any chances with the latest threat to harm people on campus. (CBC) Police are investigating another threat involving the University of British Columbia, the RCMP said Tuesday. A threat that people would be harmed prompted police to lock down the Biological Sciences Building at UBC last Wednesday night. RCMP Const. Annie Linteau said another threatening call was received Tuesday, indicating that the previous threat would be carried out on Wednesday. In the latest incident, the caller did not specify a location within the UBC Point Grey campus or the method of doing harm. Linteau said police will increase their presence on campus tomorrow, but a spokesman for the university said it will be business as usual. How equipped are police to deal with serious mental health problems?
Some mental health experts say a new report by the Vancouver Police Department highlights a staggering gap in services for mentally ill people. The leaked report by VPD Det. Fiona Wilson-Bates is to be released Monday morning. It says that police have become the “de facto” front-line mental health workers of the city.
