Affordable Housing

Activists in toronto say the city needs to take action to help provide more affordable housing. They’re suggesting a “use it or lose it” bylaw, which would allow the city to expropriate abandoned buildings and turn them into housing. Critics say it’s just not that easy and point out that the process would be long, complicated and expensive. But proponents say something has to be done to make affordable housing available. What do you think the city should do? Is a “use it or lose it” bylaw needed, or are there other options available? What’s your view?

Dangerous driving
Police in Ontario have started enforcing a new law intended to crack down on street racing and dangerous driving. The new legislations provides for licence suspensions towing and storing their vehicles for seven days, fines of between $2,000 to $10,000. Street racers could also face jail time. What’s your view? Do you think the penalties are enough to reduce street racing in Ontario?

Dogs in the city
It’s an emotional issue no matter which side of the debate you’re on: dogs in parks. Now the toronto parks committee wants to impose a licence fee and other restrictions on professional dog walkers to try and control the number of dogs in the city’s off-leash areas. The city is proposing a limit of six dogs per walker and a licensing fee of $200 per year. The chair of the parks committee, Paula Fletcher, calls it “a very extreme issue. You either love dogs or you hate dogs and people have very strong opinions.” The new rules, she says, are aimed at cracking down on those who abuse the system. What’s your view? Do you think toronto needs tougher rules for dog walkers or is it just money grab by the city?

Fuel requests heat up Sally Ann phones
The Salvation Army says it’s getting more than a dozen calls a day from desperate people who cannot afford to heat their homes.
